MATTHEW REED WINS THUNDER ON THE MOUNT SPRINTCARS AT REDLINE RACEWAY

Sprintcar action returned to Redline Raceway when the ‘Thunder on the Mount’ event for 360ci Sprintcars took place on Saturday night the 28th of January with Matthew Reed a guest driver for Michael Cunningham taking the victory in front of a healthy crowd with full support from the popular Street Stocks once again.

The Sprintcars arrived with fourteen competitors including Chris Solomon who was a winner at Redline last season and leader of the current points table for competitors in the Bacchus Marsh ‘Sprintcar Thunder’ series of which this race meeting was a part of. Whilst regular state ‘All Star Sprintcar’ series performers Wayne Logue, Domain Ramsey & Zac Farrar were also involved.

Over four heats Paul Solomon won the first heat with the quickest overall heat time and the quickest individual lap of the evening, the lap was recorded at 13.945 seconds as he won from Logue and James Hennessey. Ken Hutchins a local from Bacchus Marsh and a member of the Redline club took a win in heat two from Ramsey and Reed with Reed taking his first win of the night in the second round from Kristy Ellis and Hutchins before the heats were rounded out with a Hennessey win from Chris Solomon who crashed out in his first heat with Ramsey in third place.

In the twenty five lap final Hennessey began on pole position and was quickly set up by the pack and slipped down the order. Domain Ramsey brought on a yellow light soon after when he spun causing two other cars to come to a complete stop whilst he flicked his race car around and continued on.  Reed set a cracking pace at the front of the field and Paul Solomon was giving the chase with Hutchins in third place and Logue, Hennessey and Chris Solomon coming at him.

A Chris Solomon weaved his way through the pack and soon past his brother for second place and Hennessey mounted a comeback as he moved back upto fourth place.

Ramsey spun a second time this time coming to a complete stop and was given a disqualification flag due to needing to ‘push starts’ which is a Sprintcar rule. Upon hearing this news Ramsey was quick to correctly disagree with the steward’s decision. As that mistake was sorted out between officials and the driver Reed led the field to restart the race. Ramsey restarted at the rear of the field with five laps to go.

Reed continued on where he left off with Chris Solomon pursuing, Paul Solomon suffered a flat tyre and circulated high on the track trying to stay out of everybody’s way whilst Hennessey regained third place with Hutchins chasing and a fast finishing Ramsey reaching fifth place from the twelfth he restarted in. Reed crossed the line as the winner four and a half seconds in front of Chris Solomon and Hennessey as the top three with Hutchins, Ramsey, Logue, Ellis, Farrer, Jason Forbes, Andrew Howard and Paul Solomon completing the results.

In Street Stocks Rikki Stewart, Andrew Carmichael and Dean Heseltine won the first round heats before Jason Degoldi, Aaron Smith and Carmichael took wins in the second round which also included a massive rollover by Fred Cattermole on the stewards straight wrecking his race car. In third round Lewis Clark and then Carmichael visiting from the Swan Hill Speedway Club took wins with Smith closing out the heat results winning the last qualifier.

The feature race starters then competed in a forty lap final with twenty laps each direction to entertain the crowd. Carmichael led early and was red hot favourite with a clean sweep of heat wins however he missed the set up in tricky conditions for the final and started to slip back in the field. Pressure from Darryl Atkinson forced Carmichael to drop back as Atkinson took charge.

Early feature race causalities included Clark who had the initial lead, Smith who had raced well also dropped out. Rick Sankey was entertaining whilst Dale Bromeley and Shaun Henry and Dylan Campton chased Atkinson.

Positions swapped from time to time between third to fifth places however Atkinson chased by Bromeley all the way maintained a lead and won with Henry, Campton and Darren Matthews the top five.

Formula V8 racing finished with a win to Steve Forte from Clinton Purdie, Russ Matthews, Lindsey Fox and Pete Chettleborough whilst some visiting Dwarf Cars and Late Models ran display events for the crowd.

Redline Raceway will be back on the 11th of February with the Modified Production Sedan’s state series round with visiting support category the Victorian Mini Sprints and club classes.
